A Preview of the Stargazer New Owner Guide
Every Stargazer puppy goes home with individualized feeding, care, training, and transition guidance. This preview covers several of the standards we discuss with our families before go-home day. It is educational only. Recommendations may change based on the individual puppy, current veterinary guidance, and what we learn as the puppy develops.
Heat Safety
Bernese Mountain Dogs are not built for heat. Provide constant access to shade and fresh water, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during warm weather. Exercise early in the morning or later in the evening. Keep walks short, watch the pavement temperature, and never assume a dog is comfortable simply because they are still willing to keep going.
Protecting Growing Bodies
Puppies need movement, exploration, and play, but growing joints are not ready for repetitive impact or forced endurance. Avoid sustained jogging, repeated jumping, stairs, hiking, and excessive exercise on hard surfaces. Choose age-appropriate walks, free movement on safe terrain, short training sessions, and supervised play. Exercise should build confidence and coordination, not exhaustion.
Keep the Puppy Lean
Excess weight places unnecessary stress on growing joints and can contribute to orthopedic and other health problems. You should be able to feel the ribs easily beneath a light covering of tissue, and the puppy should have a visible waist when viewed from above. Monitor body condition, not only the number on the scale. Discuss meaningful weight changes with us and your veterinarian.
Scheduled Feeding and Food Transitions
Feed measured meals on a consistent schedule. Young puppies may begin with three meals per day and transition to two as they mature (tyically around 12 weeks old). Each Stargazer puppy goes home with an individualized feeding plan and transition instructions. Make food changes gradually to reduce digestive upset. Growth should remain steady and lean. More food is not automatically better.
Grooming and Double-Coat Care
Bernese Mountain Dogs have a heavy double coat that requires regular brushing and thorough drying after baths or swimming. Brush several times each week using appropriate tools for the coat. During seasonal shedding, more frequent grooming will be needed. After bathing, dry the coat completely to the skin. A damp undercoat can contribute to irritation, odor, matting, and hot spots. Grooming is also handling practice. Use it to build cooperation with brushing, feet, ears, nails, and body checks.
Training and Socialization
Training begins the day your puppy comes home. We expect families to continue structured socialization, handling, crate training, household manners, and basic obedience. Formal puppy class should begin as soon as age, health, and vaccination status allow. Stargazer puppies are placed with families prepared to provide clear expectations, consistent reinforcement, and continued training beyond the puppy stage.
Supervised Play
Play should be appropriate for the puppy’s age, size, confidence, and physical development. Closely supervise interactions with larger, stronger, or unfamiliar dogs. Interrupt body slamming, relentless chasing, pinning, or play that becomes one-sided. Bigger dogs do not automatically understand how to adjust for a puppy. Good play includes pauses, role reversals, and both dogs choosing to reengage.
Choose Toys With Safety in Mind
Rope fibers, fabric, stuffing, and pieces of damaged toys can be swallowed and cause serious intestinal problems. Choose durable, size-appropriate toys and inspect them regularly. Remove anything frayed, cracked, torn, or small enough to swallow. No toy is indestructible, and supervision still matters.
